Vol. 484 No. 1

Written Answers. - Departmental Estimates.

Derek McDowell

Question:

62 Mr. McDowell asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if he will account for the reduction of 4 per cent provided for his Department in the 1998 Estimates; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21506/97]

The 1997 forecast outturn for my Department published in the Abridged Version of the Estimates for Public Services 1998 reflects the outturn of the former Department of Tourism and Trade up to 11 July last, and the forecast outturn for the Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation from 12 July 1997 to 31 December 1997. The 1998 Estimate, however, is solely in respect of the Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation.

For a valid comparison to be made between 1997 and 1998, it is necessary to include the projected outturn for all of 1997 under the subheads which are now the responsibility of my Department. The forecast outturn for 1997 for these subheads is £79.564 million. My Department's Estimate for 1998, at £83.498 million, represents, therefore, an increase of 4.9 per cent.
