138 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the recent meeting between the British Prime Minister and the chairman of Microsoft, Mr. Bill Gates; and if he has extended a similar invitation to Mr. Gates. [17601/97]
I am aware of the meeting in question, which was held between the British Prime Minister and Mr. Bill Gates, chairman and chief executive officer of Microsoft on 7 October 1997. The Deputy should note that the meeting was held at the request of Microsoft UK.
I have not extended an invitation of the type mentioned by the Deputy to Mr. Gates. However, officials from my Department have met with representatives of Microsoft Corporation on a number of occasions to discuss information technology matters.
