Vol. 484 No. 2

Written Answers. - Curriculum Changes.

Nora Owen

Question:

102 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has undertaken any detailed planning into the way in which the proposed curriculum changes at primary level can be properly resourced. [16694/97]

While work by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment on detailed proposals for the revision of the primary curriculum is nearing completion, my Department has been engaged for some time in preparatory planning for the introduction of the revised curriculum.

A special implementation group, representative of the main partners in education — teachers, parents and school managements — and the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment, has been set up to consider all aspects related to the implementation of the revised curriculum.

The introduction of the curriculum will also be supported by a targeted programme of in-career development. This programme will be delivered in consultation with the main interest groups.

I assure the Deputies that I am attaching particular importance to securing the necessary resources to ensure the successful implementation of the proposed curriculum changes.
