Vol. 484 No. 4

Written Answers - Psychological Service.

Liz McManus

Question:

115 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of psychologists currently employed to cater for the needs of prisoners and staff in the prison system; his views on whether this level of cover is adequate; and the plans, if any, there are to recruit additional psychologists to match the planned growth in the prison population. [22485/97]

There are eight psychologists employed by my Department's clinical psychological service, dealing exclusively with the prison system. Sanction was secured for the continued employment on a temporary basis of two psychologists pending a review of the service by the interim prisons board which, as I have already announced, I intend to appoint shortly.
