Vol. 484 No. 4

Written Answers - Early Retirement Scheme.

Ulick Burke

Question:

123 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of applicants at primary and secondary level who sought early retirement under the most recent scheme; the number of those applications which have been finalised; the number whose applications are still being processed; the reason for the delay in processing in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22442/97]

I take it that the Deputy is referring to the early retirement provision which was notified to schools in September 1997. Applications from teachers who wished to retire with effect from 19 December 1997 were invited. Teachers were given until 24 October to apply. In all, 63 applications have been received — 28 from primary teachers and 35 from second level teachers.

All applicants have been advised of the outcome of their application or have been requested for further information, as appropriate. Successful applicants have two weeks in which to make up their minds as to whether they will, in fact, retire. As retirements will not take effect until 19 December, all applicants are currently in receipt of salary and will be paid salary up to 31 December. If they decide to retire, the amount paid in respect of the period from 20 December to 31 December will be treated as an advance of pension.
