Vol. 484 No. 4

Written Answers - In-Service Training.

Ulick Burke

Question:

126 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Education and Science the total funds available to primary and second level education for in-service career developments for each of the years from 1996 to 1998; the number of teachers involved for each of these years; the subject areas in which in-service will be available in 1998 and funded in total by his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22445/97]

Provision for in-service in the 1996 Estimates was £6.336 million and the outturn was £7.558 million. The provision in the 1997 Estimates was £6.634 million and the outturn is expected to be £8.634 million. The provision in the 1998 Estimates is £10.4 million, including £3 million for targeted information technology training.

Lists of rolls from in-service courses are not stored on a Departmental database and, therefore, data on the overall number of teachers involved in in-service courses are not available. However, I can confirm that approximately 194,000 participant training days were provided for teachers, management and parents in 1996.

The subject areas included in my Department's in-service plan for 1998 are as set out in the following table:
