The objective of capitalising on Ireland's position as a suitable environment for growing trees has been very much the focus of strategic thinking for forestry in recent times. Policy in this regard is outlined in the strategic plan for the development of the Forestry Sector in Ireland, published last year. The overall aim of the strategic plan is to develop forestry to a scale and in a manner which maximises its contribution to the national economic and social well-being on a sustainable basis and which is compatible with the protection of the environment.
A vigorous forestry programme is currently being undertaken by my Department to achieve these aims. The programme is supported by the Department's afforestation grant and premium scheme: Coillte Teoranta, as well as other private planters, are participants in the national afforestation programme.
