Bernard Allen

Question:

76 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will give detailed information on his two visits to the United States in 1993 and 1994; the dates of the visits; the names of the persons who accompanied him on each of the visits; the purposes of the visits; the areas in the United States visited; and the events arranged during his visits. [22394/97]

As Minister for Agriculture and Food I visited the United States on one occasion in 1993 at the request of the IDA and once in 1994 at the request of Forbairt. I was accompanied by my wife and Mr. Michael Dowling, Department Secretary at that time. Between 16 and 22 May 1993 I visited the following companies as part of the IDA promotional tour: Campbell Soup Company, New Jersey; Wyeth International, Philadelphia; Kerry Ingredient, Wisconsin; Avonmore Distribution, Wisconsin; Irish Dairy Board, Chicago; Hayward OSB Plants, Chicago; Luigino's Corporation, Duluth; Medite Corporation, Dallas and Valhi Corporation, Dallas.

In the following year, 1994, I visited the following companies between 1 and 8 May as part of the Forbairt promotional tour: PepsiCo Incorporated, New York; President Infoods Incorporated, New York; P.G. & Associates, New York; Heinz Company, Pennsylvania; Land O Lakes, Minneapolis and Kilkoman Foods Incorporated, Wisconsin.

I also had meetings with representatives of Irish companies based in the United States, including Bord na Móna, Bord Fáilte, the Irish Trade Board, the Irish Dairy Board, Shannon Development, Dairygold, Waterford Foods, the Irish Embassy and USDA in Washington. Both trips were a success and a good number of jobs in this country were secured as a result.
