Written Answers. - Health Services.

Alan Shatter

Question:

76 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Health and Children when services will be provided in the north-east area for people with epilepsy particularly services which include guidance and counselling, training and awareness raising regarding epilepsy. [22503/97]

All health services are available to people with epilepsy, such as general practitioner services, public health nurse services, hospital services and para-medical services. Various grants and allowances are also available in special cases.

In addition, people who suffer from epilepsy are entitled to a long-term illness card to pay for medication relative to this condition. If necessary, people with epilepsy may avail of specialist services for this condition and can be referred to neurology services in the North-Eastern Health Board. General practitioners and public health nurses are available to provide information, guidance and counselling for people with epilepsy. Training specific to people with epilepsy can be provided on the recommendation of the vocational assessment officer of the National Rehabilitation Board. Parenting courses are available through the social work department.
