Question:

136 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Defence the long-term intentions, if any, he has for the utilisation of Devoy Barracks, Naas, County Kildare as an apprentice school; whether he intends to refurbish facilities there; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23315/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 133 and 136 together.

A total of 32 apprentices are currently assigned to the Army Apprentice School in Devoy Barracks, Naas. A recruitment competition for additional apprentices concluded recently, and ten new apprentices will be assigned to the school early in 1998.

Ongoing maintenance requirements at Devoy Barracks, Naas will continue to be carried out by the Corps of Engineers, as required, within available resources.

No decision has been made to close the Army Apprentice School in Naas.
