Vol. 485 No. 3

Written Answers. - Food Hygiene.

Michael Ring

Question:

171 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the plans, if any, he has to introduce a grant scheme to enable meat processors to provide the necessary equipment and train staff for the safe removal of dirt from animal hides to reduce the risk of E coli contamination. [23286/97]

I have no plans to introduce a grant scheme to provide equipment and to train meat plant staff to implement a clean cattle policy. The operation of good hygiene practices is an essential requirement for the operation of a meat processing plant and the appropriate training of staff is a matter for the industry itself.
