Vol. 485 No. 3

Written Answers. - Livestock Sales.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

177 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he intends to introduce regulations restricting the practice of selling calves individually outside of the formal mart structure. [23349/97]

The Livestock Marts Act, 1967 governs the sale of livestock by auction. All other sales are outside the scope of the Act. However, I would advise the House that I will be introducing legislation shortly to require all those trading in cattle and other animals to be registered. In addition, it will shortly be a requirement that all cattle movements will have to be notified.
