Question:

217 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will provide financial assistance to the Irish Eating Disorders Association who provide invaluable support to sufferers and their families; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23423/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 216 and 217 together.

Health boards are responsible for the delivery of health services in their respective functional areas, including the provision of care to persons presenting with eating disorders. However, I am concerned at preventing these conditions arising in the first instance. Consequently, the Health Promotion Unit of my Department is actively involved with the Department of Education and Science in the promotion of healthy nutrition in schools and in programmes which foster self-esteem and positive body-awareness. The unit has also produced a leaflet on eating disorders which is available from my Department and which is being widely distributed throughout the country.
I am not aware of a request by the Irish Eating Disorders Association for funding from my Department. However, grants totalling £6,000 will be paid this year to another support group.
