Written Answers. - Army Barracks.

Billy Timmins

Question:

17 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Defence the cost of the damage caused by the fire at Cathal Brugha Barracks in September 1997; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18128/97]

Brian O'Shea

Question:

35 Mr. O'shea asked the Minister for Defence the damage caused in the recent fire to the central dining complex in Cathal Brugha Barracks; the reasons for the fire; when the complex will be back in action; and whether he has satisfied himself with the fire precaution issues for a new building raised by this fire. [23100/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 17 and 35 together.

The estimated cost of repairs to the dining complex at Cathal Brugha Barracks arising from the recent fire is in excess of £1 million. A court of inquiry has been set up to examine the circumstances surrounding the fire. Temporary catering facilities have been put in place pending repairs to the building. A contract for replacement of the roof has recently been awarded and tender documents for the balance of the repair works are being prepared at present. The provision of the dining complex in 1993 involved the reconstruction of a number of very old buildings and the work was undertaken in accordance with all the building regulations relevant at the time. All refurbishment work now required will of course meet current building regulations.
