A total of 1,271 officers of the Permanent Defence Force were appraised by means of annual confidential reports in 1995 and 1,760 were so appraised in 1996. Details of the ratings awarded, with the number of officers awarded each of the ratings in 1995 and 1996, are in the form of a tabular statement which I propose to circulate in the Official Report.
The compilation of similar statistics for 1997 has not yet been completed. Defence Force Regulations prescribe the categories of officers in respect of whom an annual confidential report shall not be completed. These include general officers, aides de camp, an officer who is nearing retirement and officers who have been retained in service, at their own request, beyond the normal retirement ages for their ranks.
