Vol. 485 No. 3

Written Answers. - Medical Grading.

Dinny McGinley

Question:

40 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Defence if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the Defence Forces regulations on medical grading of military personnel, including those relating to standards of hearing, were amended on 6 October 1997 before discussions with the representative associations on the matter had concluded; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18162/97]

Consultations took place with both PDFORRA and RACO on the new system of medical grading for military personnel prior to its introduction. At meetings with both associations the Director of the Army Medical Corps explained the new system and the associations were also assured that, in relation to the discharge of personnel below medical standards, it would not operate any differently from the previous regime. Also conerns expressed by RACO were taken into consideration in drafting the amended grading scheme.
