Question:

116 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Defence the number of Defence Forces pensioners as at 30 November 1997; the anticipated number in 2007 and in 2017; the total payments made in relation to these pensions as at 30 November 1997; and the number of pensioners as at 30 November 1996. [23295/97]

The number of Defence Forces pensioners, including Veterans of the War of Independence and surviving spouses and children, was 11,757 at 30 November 1997 and 11,309 at 30 November 1996.

The gross expenditure under the 1997 Vote for Army Pensions up to 30 November 1997 was £80.858 million.

Projections in respect of the numbers of Defence Forces pensioners in the years 2007 and 2017 are not available.
