Vol. 485 No. 3

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Accommodation.

Michael Bell

Question:

120 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Defence the criteria for non-payment by living-in personnel of the use of Defence Forces accommodation; and if he will list this accommodation. [23299/97]

A number of years ago a grading structure was established for accommodation for single living-in personnel. Accommodation which is constructed, decorated and furnished to a very high level is described as "standard accommodation" and personnel in occupation, within a defined occupancy level, are required to pay a small charge by deduction from pay. Some accommodation, while in reasonable decorative order and having limited furnishings, may be heated by open fire or gas heater or may have ablutions and toilet facilities separate from the rooms. This type of accommodation is defined as "substandard" and no charge is payable by the occupants.

A third category of accommodation was defined as "emergency accommodation" and the name suggests it is not regarded as appropriate for long-term use. No charge is made in the event that personnel may be required to be billeted there.
