18 Mr. Ring asked the Taoiseach the level and numbers of unemployed people at each employment exchange in County Mayo as of 1 January and 1 September for each of the years 1995, 1996 and 1997; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1900/98]
Definitive statistics on the level of unemployment are based on the labour force survey. Unfortunately, LFS results are not available for towns or catchment areas of social welfare offices.
The monthly live register figures include data on claimants of unemployment benefit, unemployment assistance and other registrants classified by local office of registration. I propose to circulate in the Official Report a table setting out the numbers on the live register at each social welfare local office in County Mayo at the end of August and December from 1994 to 1997. It should be noted that the live register is not an accurate statistical indicator of the level of unemployment.
