Vol. 486 No. 6

Written Answers. - Offshore Islands.

Michael Ring

Question:

253 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands where the £1 million in 1996 provided for infrastructure on offshore islands and the £1 million provided in 1997 for access to offshore islands was actually spent giving a breakdown of the funding allocation in the years 1996 and 1997 for each island; the amount of this funding left for allocation; the islands which will receive funding from the £1.5 million allocation for 1998, in view of the commitment given by the Government, that one quarter of the funding would be allocated to County Mayo; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3105/98]

The following table contains details of allocations from the islands development fund for the years 1996 and 1997, as requested by the Deputy. None of this funding remains to be allocated. No commitments have as yet been made from the £1.6 million capital allocation for island development in 1998. I am not aware of the commitment concerning County Mayo referred to by the Deputy. The Deputy will also be aware that the vast bulk of the allocations of money was made during the term of the last Government when this responsibility lay with the then Minister, Deputy Donal Carey acting as Minister of State at the Department of the Taoiseach. The present Government is committed to all the islands and has provided greatly enhanced funding for the islands this year as well as transferring responsibility for the islands to this Department giving, for the first time, a Department with a direct responsibility for island affairs.
