Vol. 487 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Building Project.

Nora Owen

Question:

132 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will provide resources for a sports hall at Holy Faith De La Salle community school, Skerries, County Dublin in view of the fact that there are over 800 pupils in this school without these facilities and the pupils have not been able to avail of physical education lessons in their school. [3494/98]

It is the policy of my Department to provide PE halls as part of the schedule of accommodation for all new post-primary schools. PE halls are also provided when a major extension to a school which does not have such a facility is being built. In addition, my Department has a programme for providing PE halls as stand-alone projects at post-primary schools which do not already have this facility and it is anticipated that a number of such projects will proceed to construction during 1998. In all cases, the appropriate range of physical education equipment is provided as part of the project. The question of providing physical education facilities at the school in question can only be considered in the context of the capital available for post-primary building purposes generally. The situation at Holy Faith De La Salle community school is currently being reviewed and I can assure the Deputy the school will be given every consideration when the review is completed.
