Vol. 487 No. 1

Written Answers. - Parent-School Liaison.

Richard Bruton

Question:

135 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science his views on whether parents should be provided at the beginning of each school year with a resume of the syllabus to be covered, which would assist them in monitoring the progress of their children at school; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3499/98]

One of the objects of the Education (No. 2) Bill, 1997, which is currently before the House, is to promote effective liaison between schools and parents. Parent-school relationships are particularly important in the monitoring of a child's progress and development. I would expect that co-operation between schools and parents in matters such as that raised by the Deputy should develop naturally in each case as the needs of the students, the parents and teachers require. While I would encourage such co-operation and the concept of partnership it is not my intention to be prescriptive in this matter.
