Vol. 487 No. 1

Written Answers. - Child Abuse.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

53 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation whether his Department's attention has been drawn to accusations of child abuse in other Irish sports, other than those revealed in Irish swimming; and the measures, if any, he will identify and take to deal with these abuses. [3459/98]

I presume the Deputy is referring to child sexual abuse. My Department's attention has not been drawn specifically to any further accusations of child abuse in other sports, but is aware from reports in the media of a number of cases pending. In relation to measures to respond to child sexual abuse, I refer the Deputy to my replies of today to Parliamentary Questions Nos. 26, 34, 51, and 54 relating to the same matter.
