Question:

75 Mr. Gormley asked the Taoiseach the statistics available since 1990 in relation to the number of people who have died directly as a result of the consumption of substances (details supplied). [3584/98]

Statistics on causes of death are compiled by the Central Statistics Office using the World Health Organisation's Ninth Revision of the International Classification of Diseases, Injuries and Causes of Death (ICD-9). The relevant statistics in relation to deaths recorded as directly related to drug or alcohol consumption are set out in the following table. Deaths which may have been indirectly affected by the consumption of substances such as nicotine, alcohol or other drugs are not separately identified in the statistics.
