Vol. 487 No. 1

Written Answers. - Hospital Accommodation.

Michael P. Kitt

Question:

99 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for Health and Children if a decision will be made to provide additional beds at the Bon Secour Hospital, Tuam, County Galway in view of the very serious overcrowding at University College Hospital, Galway. [3470/98]

I understand from the Western Health Board that the major development works under way at University College Hospital, Galway have necessitated the temporary withdrawal from service of a number of beds. This, together with the high level of demand at this time of year, has resulted in pressure on beds at the hospital at times. However, every effort is being made by hospital management to minimise any inconvenience to patients, by means of measures such as the transfer of patients to long stay accommodation and the transfer of patients to Merlin Park Regional Hospital, Galway, as appropriate.

The board has stated it does not consider the provision of beds at the Bon Secours Hospital in Tuam to be a viable solution to the problems identified.
