Vol. 487 No. 1

Written Answers. - Special Areas of Conservation.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

118 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands whether her Department has satisfied itself that no risk exists to a natural heritage area at Ballisodare Bay, County Sligo due to the close proximity of industrial activity. [3579/98]

The site in question has been proposed as a special area of conservation (SAC) under the EU habitats directive.

All new development proposals at the site are monitored by Dúchas, my Department's heritage service, as is the case with other proposed SACs. Dúchas is not aware of any current development applications which are likely to cause damage to the site. Should any new proposals arise which are likely to cause damage, they will be opposed by Dúchas.

I am not aware of any specific current threats from existing industrial activity.
