Vol. 487 No. 6

Written Answers - Wheelchair Accessible Taxis.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

230 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the position regarding regulations for wheelchair accessible taxis; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4589/98]

The current regime for wheelchair accessible taxis is provided by the Road Traffic (Public Service Vehicles) (Amendment) Regulations, 1995 as amended by the Road Traffic (Public Service Vehicles) (Amendment) Regulations, 1997.

The Garda, who are responsible under these arrangements for certifying the suitability of vehicles for use as wheelchair accessible taxis, have recently represented to my Department that certain changes in the regulations may be desirable. My Department is giving urgent consideration to this matter so as to facilitate the early coming into service of additional wheelchair accessible taxis in Dublin and other locations where new licences have recently been provisionally granted.
