Vol. 487 No. 6

Written Answers - Wheelchair Accessible Taxis.

Ivor Callely

Question:

282 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to difficulties being experienced by taxi drivers to have their wheelchair accessible vehicles approved by the carriage office; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4677/98]

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 260 of 10 February 1998 concerning the difficulties which have arisen in regard to the issue by the Garda authorities of certificates of suitability for wheelchair accessible taxis.

I assure the Deputy that all concerned with this matter are aware of the difficulties being experienced by the taxi drivers and that the Department of the Environment and Local Government is urgently seeking a resolution in consultation with the Garda authorities and the Attorney General.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

283 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a person (details supplied) in Dublin 6W is losing his livelihood due to the carriage office's refusal to recognise the new legislation for the issuing of taxi plates for wheelchair accessible taxis; the reason for the carriage office's objections; and when they will accept the legislation so that taxi plates can be issued. [5289/98]

I set out in my reply of 10 February 1998 to Question No. 260 the difficulties which have arisen in regard to the issue by the Garda authorities of certificates of suitability for wheelchair accessible taxis.

I assure the Deputy that the Garda authorities are aware of the problems being experienced by the person referred to by him and that an urgent resolution of the matter is being sought by the Department of the Environment and Local Government in consultation with the Garda authorities and the Attorney General.
