Vol. 487 No. 6

Written Answers - School Facilities.

Richard Bruton

Question:

321 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if his policy is to include provision of a physical education hall in the context of temporary provision of prefabs for a school undergoing major expansion. [4605/98]

It is the policy of my Department to provide PE halls as part of the schedule of accommodation for all new post-primary schools. PE halls are also provided when a major extension to a school which does not have such a facility is being built.

In addition, my Department has a programme of PE halls as stand-alone projects at post-primary schools which do not already have this facility and it is anticipated that a number of such projects will proceed to construction during 1998.

Pre-fabricated accommodation is provided in situations where permanent accommodation is not warranted, for example, to cater for a temporary increase in enrolments which will not be sustained in the long-term. Such provision does not fall into the category of a major project.
