Vol. 487 No. 6

Written Answers - Leaving Certificate Examination.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

322 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science the proposals, if any, he has to revise the points system at leaving certificate; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4606/98]

I set up the commission on the points system on 15 October, 1997. The commission is reviewing the present system of entry to thirdlevel institutions and will make any recommendations it considers appropriate. The commission is currently seeking submissions from the general public.

The setting up of the commission met an important commitment in the Government's An Action Programme for the Millennium which included as a key priority the appointment of a high-powered group to examine the points system.
An essential role for the commission will be to draw up an implementation strategy for its recommendations.
