Vol. 487 No. 6

Written Answers - Special Education Needs.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

323 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science if all the pupils who graduated from special classes in national schools throughout the country in each of the last three years have obtained suitable placement in second level schools; the number who obtained no placement; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4607/98]

I regret that the specific information regarding pupil numbers requested by the Deputy is not available in my Department.

Some children who attended special classes at primary level, go on to secure placements in second-level schools on an integrated basis, with the support where necessary of remedial or resource teachers. In other cases, children leaving special classes in the primary system may be placed in a special class at second-level.

It should also be noted that some special classes at primary level enrol pupils from age four to 18 years.

The approach adopted in any given case is determined by the educational needs and capacity of the individual child.
