Emmet Stagg

Question:

131 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the position regarding discussion with STAD on the proposed funding by the Government of the High Court case against British Nuclear Fuels Limited; if the group has agreed to remove the Irish State as a defendant in their case; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4881/98]

I propose to answer Questions Nos. 70 and 131 together.

I refer the Deputy to my answer to Questions Nos. 10 and 14 of the 16 December 1997 and Question 320 of 28 January 1998.

The Deputy will be aware that the Government has offered a revised package of assistance to the residents relating to research activities mainly. Discussion with the residents and their representatives on the nature of this offer are ongoing and are being carried out in a confidential manner. It is not helpful to go into the matter in detail at this stage. However, I can assure the Deputies that every effort is being made to progress matters as quickly as possible.
