Vol. 487 No. 6

Written Answers - Rail Network.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

80 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if her attention has been drawn to the rapidly expanding need for the enhancement and development of facilities on the Maynooth to Dublin commuter rail service; if she has received communication from Iarnród Éireann in this regard; if so, if this communication has entailed the provision of extra track and station facilities en route; the extent and location of these facilities; if she is in a position to ensure that the necessary EU and Exchequer funds will be made available for the promotion of this project in the near future; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4776/98]

I am aware of the needs of the Dublin suburban rail network and in particular the Maynooth line. Indeed, I have already advised the Deputy in my reply to his question of 28 January 1998 that the specific requirements of the Maynooth suburban rail service are being evaluated as part of the review of Dublin's suburban rail development needs which is being undertaken by CIE at present.

Earlier proposals from CIE had concentrated on the doubling of the line. However, it became clear during an independent evaluation of these proposals that doubling the railway line from Clonsilla to Maynooth would not in itself bring about any material improvement in suburban rail services on that line. A wider range of development constraints including signalling, rolling stock and the capacity of the city centre rail network to cater for additional services are, therefore, being examined with a view to identifying clear investment priorities.

This study, which CIE will finalise shortly, will provide the basis for discussions with the European Commission on investment priorities and funding aspects.
