Vol. 487 No. 6

Written Answers - Occupational Insurance.

Willie Penrose

Question:

89 Mr. Penrose asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if her attention has been drawn to the difficulties being incurred by retained firemen in securing permanent and total disablement insurance cover because of their occupation; if she will take this matter up with the Insurance Federation; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4584/98]

Neither my Department nor the Irish Insurance Federation has received representations or complaints regarding the non availability of permanent and total disablement insurance cover for retained firemen. I understand that occupational cover for both full-time and retained firemen is underwritten on behalf of local authorities by Irish Public Bodies Insurance Limited. Life and occupational insurance cover is available on an optional basis to all full-time firemen through the offices of Allied Insurance Consultants and most full-time firemen are covered under the scheme. The same broker offered a life assurance package to retained firemen, but, despite extensive advertising, the response was very poor and it was not feasible to implement the scheme.
