Vol. 487 No. 6

Written Answers - Income Tax.

Beverley Flynn

Question:

168 Ms Cooper-Flynn asked the Minister for Finance the reason a person (details supplied) in County Mayo had to pay income tax in the last ten years; the amount she paid; and the way in which it was calculated. [4527/98]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the taxpayer was issued with income tax assessments for the years 1986-87 to 1995-96 in accordance with returns of income which she submitted to the Inspector of Taxes.

The taxpayer remarried on 31 July 1995 and a notice of assessment issued for 1996-97 in accordance with the return of income submitted by her husband. The taxpayer and her husband were assessed on the basis of aggregation for 1996-97. The total income tax liability for 1986-87 to 1995-96 was £2,988.09. All tax due has been paid to date with the exception of £118.39 which is due for payment on or before 30 April 1998.

As already stated the amount of tax paid was assessed on the basis of returns of income submitted by or on behalf of the taxpayer.
