Vol. 487 No. 7

Written Answers. - Hospital Waiting Lists.

Ivor Callely

Question:

232 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health and Children if there is a hospital bed shortage in the Dublin area, in particular for the long stay accommodation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5166/98]

I am aware that there continues to be a high demand for care services for older people both community and hospital-residential based in the Eastern Health Board area.

My Department has made available additional resources to the Eastern Health Board in 1997 and 1998 to enable the board to implement measures which include 44 additional contract private nursing home places in November 1997; 50 bed community nursing unit for older persons on the South Circular Road, scheduled to open in March 1998; 40 long stay places for older persons, on a phased basis, at St. Monica's, Belvedere Place from March 1998; two additional community ward teams to be in place by 1 May 1998; a day care service for up to 15 dementia patients at St. Joseph's, Crinken from 2 March 1998; and provision of a day unit for 20 older people at St. Brigid's, Crooksling from May 1998.

The Eastern Health Board has plans for the continued development of in-patient and community facilities for older people and these plans will be implemented on a phased basis as resources permit.
