Vol. 487 No. 7

Written Answers. - Recreational Facilities Scheme.

Michael Creed

Question:

257 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the funding, if any, that has been made available by his Department under the recreational amenities grants or from any other source for the construction of community swimming pools; if so, whether funding is currently available; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5253/98]

The sports capital programme provides national lottery funding towards the provision of sports facilities at national, regional and local level. The recreational facilities scheme assists voluntary community organisations in the provision of improvement to and equipping of recreational, leisure and community facilities, including swimming pools and environmental works. Under the major facilities scheme, proposals for funding for the construction of community swimmimg pools can be considered where they form part of a major sports facility at national, regional and local level.

There is a provision of £9 million in this year's Estimates for my Department for grant expenditure under the sports capital programme.

Responsibility for the construction or refurbishment of local authority swimming pools rests with the Department of the Environment and Local Government.
