Vol. 487 No. 7

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Married Quarters.

Dick Spring

Question:

36 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Defence the efforts, if any, his Department is undertaking to alleviate the problems that overholders are suffering within the Defence Forces; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5085/98]

Members of the Permanent Defence Force in occupation of married quarters are required to vacate such quarters on discharge from the force. Some former members have failed to fulfil this requirement and continue in unauthorised occupation of the quarters. Married quarters in barracks were introduced for the benefit of serving personnel and I am currently examining what steps can be taken to resolve the issues arising from the overholding of such quarters by former members of the Permanent Defence Force.
