Vol. 487 No. 7

Written Answers. - Defence Co-operation.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

42 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Defence his understanding of the term, defence co-operation, as outlined in a communiqué released by the Taoiseach and the British Prime Minister after their meeting of 12 December 1997. [5066/98]

The term "defence co-operation" is not mentioned in the communiqué to which the Deputy refers. However, the Progress Report on Co-operation between Ireland and the United Kingdom (Developing East/West Relations) which was published at that time and which was laid before both Houses of the Oireachtas includes information in relation to areas of co-operation between the respective forces of each country. These mainly include training, exchanges of information, fishery protection, search and rescue co-operation, and good-will visits.
