Vol. 487 No. 7

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Personnel.

Michael Noonan

Question:

88 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Defence if the number of non-commissioned officers in the amalgamation of the 3/30 Battalions will exceed the proposed establishment based on current strength; and, if so, the plans, if any, he has to deal with the matter. [4847/98]

The reorganisation of the Defence Forces as provided for in the Defence Forces review implementation plan is taking place at present in consultation with all of the relevant authorities. While I can confirm that, in that context, it is proposed to amalgamate 3 and 30 Infantry Battalions I am advised that the final details of the proposed amalgamation have not been concluded.

Accordingly, pending the finalisation of the amalgamation of these units it is not possible to say with certainty the number, if any, by which the strength of the amalgamated unit will exceed the current strength of the existing units. While the deployment of military personnel is entirely a matter for the military authorities having regard to the operational requirements of the force, I am advised by the military authorities that it is intended that, arising from the reorganisation of the Defence Forces, no compulsory transfers of personnel from one location to another will take place.
