Vol. 487 No. 7

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Recruitment Contracts.

Dinny McGinley

Question:

124 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Defence if the terms and conditions of service of soldiers recruited on a five year contract in 1994 have been revised. [4850/98]

The terms and conditions of service of Privates enlisted since 1994 have been discussed with PDFORRA under the provisions of the conciliation and arbitration scheme. Agreement has been reached on the broad issues with some minor matters remaining to be resolved. This agreement provides that currently serving personnel and successful applicants from future recruitment campaigns will be enlisted in the Permanent Defence Force for an initial period of five years with scope for extensions in the contract period to nine years, and, subsequently, 12 years.

Discussions on issues raised under the conciliation and arbitration scheme are confidential to the parties concerned. The Deputy will appreciate, therefore, that it would not be appropriate for me to comment further at this time.
