Vol. 487 No. 7

Written Answers. - Curragh Camp Refurbishment.

Seán Power

Question:

154 Mr. Power asked the Minister for Defence his views on whether the Curragh Camp is in need of major refurbishment; the plans, if any, he has in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5133/98]

Between 1994 and 1997 building and engineering contracts valued at about £5.5 million were awarded in relation to the Curragh Camp, for example, for the provision of UN School and a new library, refurbishment of accommodation blocks, reroofing of buildings, upgrading of central heating and window replacement. The building programme for the camp for 1998 includes provision of a new armoury, refurbishment of a dining hall and detention block, replacing staircases, refurbishment of ablutions, painting, laying of tarmacadam and upgrading of services at the Ammunition Depot. The estimated cost of these projects is £5.7 million. In addition, routine maintenance works will be carried out by the Corps of Engineers.
