166 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Defence the number of personnel enlisted into the FCA and An Slua Muirí for each of the years from 1995 to 1997; and the numbers discharged for each of those years. [5182/98]

171 Mr. M. Brady asked the Minister for Defence the number of personnel recruited to the PDF and the FCA during the period from January 1996 to January 1997; the total number of applicants; and the numbers of female applicants recruited. [5202/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 166 and 171 together.

The number of personnel enlisted in the FCA and Slua Muirí in the years 1995 to 1997 and the numbers discharged in those years are as follows:

The total number of applicants for the FCA and Slua Muirí in the period January 1996 to January 1997 is not readily available. The total number of female personnel recruited is similarly not available. Recruitment continues on an ongoing basis up to the maximum permitted strength of 16,712. A review of the Reserve Defence Force is currently under way and will examine all aspects of the Reserve including resources and training.
The number of pesonnel enlisted in the Permanent Defence Force in January 1996 to January 1997 is 183. The total number of applicants was 1,797 (1,493 male and 291 female) and 21 female applicants were enlisted.
