110 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Education and Science the proposed date for the publication by his Department of its strategy statements as required under the terms of the strategic management initiative; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5307/98]
I presume that the Deputy is referring to the strategy statement which is required under the terms of the Public Service Management Act, 1997 and which is part of the overall strategic management initiative process for the public service. In accordance with the terms of the Public Service Management Act, 1997, it is necessary for the Secretary General of my Department to submit to me the strategy statement for the Department within six months after the coming into operation of this Act — namely 1 September 1997. Thus, the strategy statement must be presented to me before 1 March 1998. Also, having regard to the legislation, the strategy statement must, with or without amendment by me, be laid before the Houses of the Oireachtas by 1 May next. I anticipate, therefore, that the strategy statement will be available publicly shortly afterwards.
