Vol. 487 No. 8

Written Answers. - Cattle Identification System.

Derek McDowell

Question:

47 Mr. McDowell asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if it is necessary for animals going for slaughter to have both TB plastic tags in their ears; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5162/98]

Under current EU and national rules, all cattle must be properly identified at all times including at time of slaughter. For cattle that have plastic tags, the requirement is that they must have two plastic tags at all times. I accept that on occasions this can lead to difficulties for farmers. However, the Deputy will appreciate it is essential that cattle must be properly identified before they enter the food chain in the context of providing the necessary assurance to consumers and customers at home and abroad.
