Question:

64 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food when the last tribunal of inquiry into the Irish beef industry was established; the basis on which the tribunal was set up; the total costs incurred to date; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5344/98]

I take it the Deputy is referring to the tribunal of inquiry into the beef processing industry. Following a Dáil motion on 24 May 1991 and a Seanad motion on 29 May 1991, the tribunal of inquiry into the beef processing industry was established on 31 May 1991. Chapter 1, page 1, of the report of the tribunal of inquiry into the beef processing industry gives the terms of reference.

The total costs incurred to date in 1998 is £177,593.64, as stated in the reply to Question No. 63.
