Vol. 488 No. 2

Written Answers. - Genetically Modified Organisms.

John Bruton

Question:

162 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the nature of the national debate he proposes to initiate on genetically modified organisms in the environment; and the methodology and time for this debate. [5948/98]

I have asked my Department to prepare a national policy position on the deliberate release to the environment of genetically modified organisms. This process includes drafting a policy paper, which, when completed shortly, will be made widely available for the purpose of consultation with all interests, including the biotechnology industry and the general public. Full details of the consultation arrangements, which will be given as much time as necessary for a full and open debate on the issues involved, will be provided with the draft consultation paper.
