The Irish National Committee for UNESCO is composed of officials from various Government Departments whose functions relate to the role of UNESCO. The Departments concerned are the Department of Education and Science, Department of Foreign Affairs, the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands, the Department of the Environment and Local Government and the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, with the Department of Education and Science acting as the co-ordinating Department.

The committee which was established in 1991 generally meets once each year and consultation between the relevant members take place as various issues arise relating to their sphere of interest. Between 1987 and 1991 matters relating to UNESCO were administered by the Department of Education and Science and the Department of Foreign Affairs in consultation with other Government Departments as appropriate.
