Vol. 488 No. 2

Written Answers. - Radon Levels in Schools.

John Bruton

Question:

202 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if a survey has been carried out on the level of radon in schools in County Meath; the assistance, if any, which has been given to schools in the county to deal with the problem; and if he is putting funds in place to ensure that action is taken on problems that are identified in the report to be published by the Radiological Protection Institution of Ireland on the level of radon in County Meath during the summer of 1998. [5981/98]

The Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland has completed a study of radon levels in dwellings in County Meath within the last year, but there has not been a specific survey of schools.

I want this issue addressed in a co-ordinated fashion for the schools in all counties and my Department is pursuing this matter with the RPII. It is my intention that radon information will be supplied to all schools in the current year and this information will cover remediation measures. I assure the Deputy that I intend to ensure that this issue is fully addressed.
