Vol. 488 No. 3

Written Answers - Schools Building Projects.

Michael Noonan

Question:

107 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the delay in sanctioning the extension to Scoil Íde, Corbally, Limerick has resulted in the 15 per cent contribution being increased by £21,000; if he will waive the increased contribution in view of the fact that the delay was by his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6030/98]

Local contributions to major capital projects are calculated on the basis of an acceptable tender price, together with an allowance for furniture and fees.

The position in respect of Scoil Íde in Corbally is that the project will go to tender very shortly. Until tenders have been received, and evaluated, it is not possible to compute the precise local contribution. In the circumstances, I have ensured that this important project has proceeded without delay. A wide range of projects were announced under my predecessor as being in a capital programme in spite of the fact that the allocated funds did not equal the total of the announced projects.

I am pleased that projects such as Scoil Íde, Corbally, will now be able to proceed without delay due to my success in securing a 40 per cent increase in the 1998 Primary Capital Estimates over the 1997 allocation of the last Government.
